SILICON

He felt like he was betraying her, but he knew if he didn’t check in, the team would look for him. They would shoot first and ask questions later, so he needed to get out ahead of the flood of bullets. “Copper?” he asked, identifying the voice on the other end of the line in a second.

“Talk to me,” she muttered.

She sounded distracted, so he talked fast. “I need trusted status for shipments from Lady Dead.”

“For government contracts? You want trusted status?”

“Or the illusion of trusted status.” He glanced down the hall toward the bedroom where he’d left Lady Dead. “And I need it by morning.”

“Did you manage to get the shipment?” she asked.

“Sitting on the airstrip. All a go,” he replied. “She thinks she’s compromised. We need to make sure she stays safe, or we’ll lose the connection.”

“Understood.” Copper paused before adding, “You safe?”

“Probably.” He ended the call with a click and headed back down the hallway. Lady Dead hadn’t moved, sleeping on her side with a gun clutched to her head like a pillow. He’d told her he’d take first watch.

It would help, however, if she’d tell him what they were watching for.

At dawn, he woke up because her hand was on his dick. The slide of her skin up and down the shaft had him moaning before he’d managed to complete a coherent thought.

“I hoped to earn your trust and submission, so that I could control you,” she said conversationally. “You gave me both before I deserved it, yet I still want to keep you.”

The words seemed to surprise her. Which was funny, since she was the one saying them. He laughed, shaking the bed.

“You’re not supposed to laugh when I have your dick in my hand,” she said, releasing his cock and smacking him on the thigh.

He captured her wrist, placing it back where it was. “I wasn’t laughing at you, but at the situation. I want to keep you, too.”

She blushed slightly, visible in the golden glow seeping in through the window. “I wasn’t kidding. I’m a fucked up woman, and you’re awful trusting to lay down and sleep with me around.”

“I respect you,” he admitted. “I’ve been watching you for years.”

It wasn’t a lie. In trying to get close to her—trying to infiltrate Red Wolf by using her—he’d spent a lot of time watching her and thinking about her.

She killed without hesitation. She used her body when it served her purposes. She worked with single minded determination for her family, and therefore for Red Wolf. She was the enemy.

Yet his fascination with her didn’t care about those little details.

He reminded himself that her weapons had killed his brothers in arms. That she’d done horrible things for the sake of money and not flinched while doing them.

Yet it was that—memories. The woman in this bed with him was more vulnerable than the one he’d watched. Without asking permission, he sat and cupped her face. “Trust me?”

She grunted. “As much as I trust anyone.”

Moving slowly, so not to spook her, he dipped his head toward hers.
